The Vision
Shot on a mix of digital and Super 8 film, 'Father' is a powerful
visual meditation on faith, feminism and the complicated process of becoming yourself.
Father is a confessional alt-pop song about growing up with institutional religion and learning to untangle your own voice from what you were taught. It explores Catholic guilt and the tension between faith, feminism and identity, asking what happens when the beliefs that shaped you no longer makes room for the person you've become.
Sisters Robyn Faye (Director and Editor) and Charly Faye (Creative Producer and Choreographer) led an almost entirely female creative team in bringing the visual world of Father to life. Bringing together movement and cinematic imagery, the video expands on the song's central themes of institutional religion, womanhood and reclaiming identity, transforming an intimate confession into a shared experience.

“Father is about growing up with institutional religion and learning to untangle your own voice
from what you were taught. It lives in the tension between faith and feminism and explores the
quiet contradiction of loving parts of a system that you have outgrown.” (Samfire)
Following its release, Father was praised by Record of the Day, who called it "a spellbinding release that deserves plays across Radio 1, Radio 2 and 6 Music" and described Samfire as "a songwriter unafraid to tackle complex themes with ambition, intimacy and real conviction.”

"We wanted to created something that was strikingly visual. Something that showed female strength, and took inspiration from the beauty of Catholic imagery. This is why we had an all female ensemble, a real church setting, and imagery inspired by renaissance paintings." (Robyn Faye)
